An absolute harmonization and integration
into the existing landscape

The dry stone walls that dominate the Cycladic landscape were converted to the main synthetic architectural tool which border the undercave indoor spaces of the suites as well the undercave –protected from north wind- outdoor space. Their rhythmical perforation creates a concatenation of frames to the view and a variform “dialogue” of the interior with the outdoor environment’s space, which as the roofs of total construction, is planted with local vegetation and other comestible bushes (thyme, rigani etc. )Planted areas are interrupted at points by the private swimming pools that pop up from the undercave courtyards and by the minimal cement mortar plates essential for walking and sitting.

Therefore architecture is subordinated to the landscape and we achieve with the choice of undercave placement of the total construction, the initial goal of our synthesis which is the inconsequential environmental imprint and the absolute harmonization and integration into the existing landscape.

The Suites

The suites of 40m2 area each, following the natural landscape are developed in two different levels. Thus, the unhindered view to the sea and the wider region is ensured. Moreover, the undercave yards with the swimming –pools, preserve the privacy and ensure the protection from any intense meteorological phenomena, like the high intensity wind that blows, mainly, during the summer months on the island.

The planning of internal space is minimalistic, based on an open plan ground-floor –sleeping area, kitchen, eating area, en suite bathroom – and on the use of local materials and techniques, as cement mortar, white plaster, local stone and natural wood.

A completely openable glass door constitutes a provisional limit with the private courtyard with swimming pool of each suite, which when completely opened completes our goal of uniting indoor and outdoor space. For the support of the complex’s operation we designed a reception , auxiliary space as well as elevator with specifications for disabled people.

Absolute privacy & unlimited view

Finally , an outdoor parking is provided an a different lever (higher) from the suites, so that nuisance, acoustic or optical , is avoided , that will cover completely the requirements of the complex.

The function of the suites with private courtyards, their independent access, the absolute privacy and the unlimited view, as well as their small number , create a quit environmental complex with modern comforts and benefits, that maintain at the same time the simplicity and the ruggedness of Tinos’ landscape.
